Antiquities of Sunderland
On Tuesday, 1st February 1900, Sunderland Antiquarian Society held their inaugural meeting in the board room of the Industrial and Provident Building Society at 42 Fawcett Street, Sunderland. The first volume of the Society’s journal, “Antiquities of Sunderland”, was printed in 1902 by the local firm of S.A. Forster, 46 John Street.
The journal contained written accounts of talks that had been given to the Society about the history of Sunderland (and its vicinity) with illustrative plates - the first article was a talk given by J. Robinson on “Sunderland Church and Parish”.
The journal retained the ‘Antiquities of Sunderland’ name for the first 27 volumes then changed its title to “Sunderland’s History” in Spring, 1983; it did, however, retain the old Antiquities title and volume number of the original journal on its inside cover. All the issues of the journal have now been scanned and will be added here to be available to Society members.
